What happens to the material?
Endurvinnslan hf. accepts deposit beverage containers delivered to SORPA and bales aluminium cans and plastic packaging in presses. The packaging is then transported overseas for recycling. Recycled aluminium cans are used to manufacture new aluminium cans; and old plastic bottles are used to manufacture polyester wool – material that can be used in the clothing industry, carpet manufacture and more. Fleece clothes are the best-known product.
Glass bottles are crushed and are used as foundation material in landscaping at the landfill site of SORPA at Álfsnes.
