Pallets, boxes and similar waste Share
The category is for pallets and boxes made of wood without foreign materials.
What happens to the material?
The material is chipped in the wood chipper of the SORPA receiving and sorting plant. This makes it possible to retrieve metal parts in mechanical sorting. The material is then used as a source of carbon in the manufacture of ferro-alloys. Such recycling of wood is the first of its kind in the world. Wood is usually used as a source of energy overseas. The use of renewable energy sources, and thereby environmentally friendly energy production here in Iceland, however, means that the wood is better utilised in this manner. This means both the reduction of coal imports and burying of organic waste.
